内容記述 | Many difficulties in acquiring English pronunciation by Japanese learners derive from the practice of teaching the written language before the spoken language. Differences between spoken and written form include those of function, context, grammar and vocabulary. One of the aspects of pronunciation which is not apparent in written English is the linking of word-final phonemes with the initial vowel in the following word. This study is an analysis of whether instruction can lead to an increase in the frequency of linking. A student in an Oral English class made six recordings of personal responses to specified topics at approximately weekly intervals. A further recording of her speech was made in a final examination. The student showed an initial improvement in the frequency of linking in the second recording, but a gradual progressive decrease in the frequency of linking over the course of the second to sixth recordings. However the student demonstrated a clear increase in the frequency of linking in the examination. Hence her use of linking showed improvement in monitored speech, but not in unmonitored speech. | |||||
